Following the establishment of the new state in 1918, the idea of fast creation of a high-quality stamp as a state symbol received a huge support and the newly established Post was looking for a most competent author. Alfons Mucha was asked to do the job as early as 30 October 1918, on condition a definitive stamp design, as the crucial one from the government's point of view, be ready within twenty-four hours. The world-famous Art Nouveau artist came with several designs: a panoramic view of Prague Castle as the seat of Czech rulers, since medieval times linked to the fate of the nation, seemed to be the least controversial one.
